FOLDEE is a compact folding cargo bike designed to carry serious loads while still fitting into real life — small homes, trains, cars and travel.
Designed and developed in Melbourne, FOLDEE combines the practicality of a cargo bike with the freedom of a folding bike.
The Story of FOLDEE
FOLDEE started with a simple question.
Tim had spent years riding and building bikes. Then he discovered cargo bikes and he was hooked. He thought that they were incredibly practical - great for carrying groceries, gear, kids or dogs - but they all seemed to have the same problem. They were big. Really big. Making it hard to store them in small homes, difficult to transport and almost impossible to travel with.
The idea slowly formed: could a cargo bike be designed to go anywhere? A bike that still carried serious loads, but could also fold down, be shipped easily, or fit into small spaces when needed. That is when Olson from LOOP cycles got onboard.
Like many good ideas, it started with experiments in the workshop. Early prototypes mixed existing bikes with custom-built front ends just to test the concept. Gradually those rough experiments turned into a completely new frame design - one built from the ground up around strength, simplicity and portability.
The goal wasn’t to reinvent the bicycle. It was to create a cargo bike that felt normal to ride, but far easier to live with.
Today FOLDEE bikes are designed and developed in Melbourne (with some outsourcing o.s.), where the first prototypes were built and tested on everything from city streets to rough races like the Melbourne Roobaix. Every version has been refined through real-world riding and feedback from everyday cyclists, messengers, families and bike enthusiasts.
FOLDEE is still a small operation and that’s deliberate. We care about thoughtful design, practical solutions and building bikes that people genuinely enjoy riding.
At its heart, FOLDEE is about one simple idea: a capable cargo bike that doesn’t take over your life when you’re not riding it.
A note from the Founder/Director
I’ve spent my whole life around bikes - whether it has been riding them, delivering on them, building them, fixing them or just obsessing over them.
Cargo bikes always fascinated me. They’re incredibly useful machines, but the reality is that many people struggle with the same issues: they’re bulky, hard to store and difficult to transport if you want to travel with them or simply move them from one place to another.
FOLDEE began as an experiment to see if that problem could be solved. Could you build a cargo bike that still carried large loads but could also pack down, travel easily and fit into everyday spaces?
The first prototypes were rough, built in a workshop in Melbourne using whatever parts were available. Over time the design evolved into a completely new frame that balanced strength, ride quality and practicality.
The goal has always been simple: build a cargo bike that feels great to ride but is easier to live with.
FOLDEE is still a small project, and that’s something I’m proud of. Every improvement comes from real riding, real feedback and a genuine love of bikes.
